Hindi film director Neeraj Pandey, who proved his mettle with espionage thriller Baby (2015), is now making another foray into the same territory with Special Ops, a web-series that will start streaming on Hotstar from 17 March.
The story dates back to 2001, when Parliament was attacked by five terrorists. While Indian agencies succeed in tracking and eliminating the five terrorists, Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) officer Himmat Singh (Kay Kay Menon), is sure that there was a sixth mastermind behind the attack.
Singh is hell-bent on nabbing the mastermind and refuses to give up even 19 years after the attack. In 2020, he forms a team consisting of Karan Tacker, Divya Dutta, Meher Vij and Saiyami Kher among others, to fulfill his mission.
The trailer of Special Ops is impressive with its international feel and absorbing storyline. We have seen stories about intelligence officers nabbing a criminal or a terrorist after much effort before. However, it is rare to find one where the protagonist waits 19 years to complete his mission.
The cinematography, background score and the editing of the trailer are praiseworthy. Seasoned artiste Kay Kay Menon appears to be in top form. We don’t see much of the other actors.
Special Ops is Pandey’s first attempt at digital content.
