65th Filmfare Awards: Gully Boy drops the mic with 10 awards

For the first time, the Filmfare Awards were held in Guwahati, Assam. The star-studded night was attended by the who’s who of Hindi cinema. Alia Bhatt, Ranveer Singh, Kartik Aaryan and Varun Dhawan were among the young stars who were present.
The annual awards night was hosted by Karan Johar and Vicky Kaushal, with performances by Akshay Kumar and Ayushmann Khurrana. Actor Govinda was felicitated with a special award for Excellence in Cinema.
The technical awards were announced earlier this month where Zoya Akhtar's Gully Boy (2019), Siddharth Anand’s War (2019), and Aditya Dhar’s Uri: The Surgical Strike (2019) won the top honours.
Rewind 2019: The 10 best Hindi films of the year
The night’s big award for Best Film (Popular) went to Gully Boy, which opened in theatres last year on Valentine’s Day. Director Zoya Akhtar and her co-writer Reema Kagti picked up the Best Screenplay award for Gully Boy, while Zoya took home the trophy for Best Director as well.
Gully Boy made it a full acting sweep with four awards as Ranveer Singh won the award for Best Actor in a Leading Role (Male) for his performance as the aspiring rapper Murad. Alia Bhatt, who played his girlfriend Safeena, won her third Best Actor in a Leading Role (Female) trophy. Ranveer Singh picked up his second Best Actor (Male) trophy.
Siddhant Chaturvedi won the Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Male) award for his role as MC Sher while Amruta Subhash won the Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Female) award for her role as Murad’s mother.
Rewind 2019: The 10 best actors of the year in Hindi cinema
Abhishek Chaubey’s Sonchiriya (2019) and Anubhav Sinha's Article 15 (2019) tied for Best Film (Critics). The latter film’s lead actor Ayushmann Khurrana won the Best Actor (Male, Critics) award, while Saand Ki Aankh’s co-stars Taapsee Pannu and Bhumi Pednekar shared the Best Actor (Female, Critics) award for their performances as sharpshooting champions and grandmothers Parkashi and Chandro Tomar.
The Best Dialogues award went to Vijay Maurya for Gully Boy, while the Best Original Story award was given to Article 15’s director Anubhav Sinha and writer Gaurav Solanki.
The music awards were dominated by Gully Boy and Kabir Singh. The two films tied for Best Music Album, while DIVINE and Ankur Tewari won the award for Best Lyrics for 'Apna Time Aayega'. Shilpa Rao won the Best Playback Singer (Female) award for 'Ghungroo' from War (2019) while Arijit Singh won the Best Playback Singer (Male) award for the Kalank (2019) title track.
Ananya Panday, daughter of actor Chunky Pandey, picked up the Best Debut Actor (Female) award for Student Of The Year 2 (2019) and Pati Patni Aur Woh (2019). Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota’s Abhimanyu Dassani, son of actress Bhagyashree, picked up the Best Debut Actor (Male) award. Aditya Dhar won the Best Debut Director award for his National award-winning film Uri: The Surgical Strike.
