Masurkar directed the National-award winning Newton, featuring Rajkummar Rao, Pankaj Tripathi, and Anjali Patil in 2017. The film went on to win the National award for Best Feature, as well as a special mention for Pankaj Tripathi for his performance. The film was later nominated as India's official entry to the 90th Academy Awards.
This will be Masurkar's first film since 2017. The filmmaker has focused on production in between. He backed Avalokita Dutt's short film in 2019. Sherni is written by Aastha Tiku, and will be directed by Masurkar.
Vidya was last seen alongside Akshay Kumar, Taapsee Pannu, Nithya Menen, and Sonakshi Sinha in Mission Mangal (2019). The actress has already finished shooting for Shakuntala Devi's biopic, Shakuntala Devi (2020), directed by Anu Menon.
Shakuntala Devi: Human Computer, also starring Sanya Malhotra, is set to release in theatres on 8 May.
