It’s been a long wait, but Irrfan Khan returns to the big screen with Angrezi Medium (2020), the follow up to Hindi Medium (2017). The action has now moved to Udaipur, Rajasthan in the film directed by Homi Adajania.
Radhika Madan plays Khan’s daughter, Tarika Bansal, who desires to study abroad in London, England. Khan is a sweet shop owner who is also battling Deepak Dobriyal’s character for the title of the original Ghasitaram in the city.
When Khan's character sets out to send his daughter abroad, he realizes the astronomical cost of her education. Later, all the seats for foreign students get filled up as well. But like in the first film, he decides to circumvent this issue by becoming a British resident to ensure Tarika gets a seat.
Once the action moves abroad, the humour is amped up as Khan and Dobriyal pose as British residents to the local police officer, played by Kareena Kapoor Khan. But there are also emotional twists ahead, as paying the fees becomes an insurmountable task for the simple shop owner. However, he is willing to sacrifice himself in order to fulill his daughter’s dreams.
Khan once again proves why he is one of the best actors in Hindi cinema, and why we have missed him since Karwaan (2018).
The song 'Ek Jindari' from the first film returns to emotional effect here. Khan, Dobriyal and actress Tillotama Shome seem to be the only returning cast members from Hindi Medium.
Adajania’s film also stars Dimple Kapadia, Ranvir Shorey, Kiku Sharda and Pankaj Tripathi. The film is due to be released on 20 March.
