No one did disco quite like Bappi Lahiri. With love all over the February air, Tanishk Bagchi's latest re-creation captures the zany, fun magic that Bappi Lahiri brought to life in the 1980s.
The song, 'Arey Pyaar Kar Le', is an update of the 'Yaar Bina Chayn Kahan Re' hit from Saaheb (1985). The update features the voices of Ayushmann Khurrana and Bappi Lahiri himself, with a rap verse by Ikka.
The song is set to a very retro disco theme with Gajraj Rao and Neena Gupta's staid parents putting on some shiny sequins as they perform on stage with their dear son Aman (Jitendra Kumar). Like a true-blue 1980s hero who decides to crash the party, Khurrana's Kartik decides to show up and steal the boy with a 'unisex' song.
Ikka's rap sets the tone for the quirky nature of the song, acting as the introduction to the new age right after the very familiar opening.
Regardless of the twist, the song truly kicks in when Bappi-da's familiar signature sounds play out. Bagchi does well not to meddle with the original much. Even Vayu's additional lyrics, voiced by Khurrana, play out to the same tune as the original.
There is some heavier percussion, with Lahiri's melodic style playing in the background. It is a nice change, even if not an improvement.
Bappi Lahiri might not be the most fashionable choice for hipsters, but the composer's impact on the Hindi music scene cannot be underestimated. This track, particularly, holds nostalgia value for many and truly checks out.
The Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan makers have also made the song fun with the visuals being as sparkly and filled with banter as the original. The moment of Gajraj Rao saying 'Ayushman bhava [Be ayushman, a pun on the actor's name; also, be long-lived]!' to Khurrana is an example.
Directed by Hitesh Kewalya, Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan is set for release in theatres on 14 February. Watch the 'Arey Pyaar Kar Le' song below and let us know if you are keen to watch the film.
