Zee5's Shukranu returns to an 'Emergency' romance set against the sterilization controversy

Featuring Divyenndu Sharma, Shweta Basu Prasad and Sheetal Thakur, the film will be premiered on the streaming platform on 14 February.

If there was not enough curiosity regarding the period of the Emergency, Zee5 is throwing in some satirical comedy as well.

The OTT platform's latest original film, Shukranu, is a take on the infamous sterilization programme undertaken by the then government of India to keep the rapidly growing population in check.

The film, which will be streamed on 14 February, features Divyenndu Sharma, Shweta Basu Prasad and Sheetal Thakur in the lead roles.

The trailer begins with the sight of people being dragged to hospitals as they are forced to undergo vasectomies. The infamous procedure was one of the many reasons that led to open rebellion against the then government of prime minister Indira Gandhi.

Unfortunately, one of the victims of the forced sterilization drive, Inder (Divyenndu Sharma) is a young, unmarried man. When Inder finally ties the knot, he struggles with his dark secret.

The troubles keep accumulating as Inder can neither confess his problem nor go further with the marriage. The film pokes fun at both societal pressure and practices through the prism of a retelling. The trailer, narrated by Vijay Raaz, captures the comical situations, fights, and even the mystery of an unplanned pregnancy that might lead to the story.

Shukranu is set to be released on the Zee5 streaming platform from 14 February.
