Mohit Suri’s Malang has done average business at the box office on its opening weekend. The film, starring Aditya Roy Kapoor, Disha Patani, Anil Kapoor and Kunal Kemmu, earned Rs24 crore nett over the weekend, as per figures shared by BoxOfficeIndia.com.
Malang opened at an average number of Rs6.50 crore nett on Friday. The film saw a slight jump over the next two days, where it made Rs8.25 crore nett and Rs9.25 crore nett on Saturday and Sunday respectively.
A number of Rs24 crore nett in three days is not bad for a film that does not have any major crowd-pulling stars. However, the problem with Malang is that it isn’t a moderate budget film. As per our trade sources, the film has been made at an estimated cost of Rs50 crore. Hence, it needs to hold well on weekdays and have a good second weekend.
This week also saw the release of Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s Shikara, which stars newcomers Aadil Khan and Sadia. Based on the issue of Kashmir Pandit exodus, the film has had a low first weekend where it could make only Rs4.55 crore nett. The numbers are low even for a low estimated budget of Rs20 crore.
Meanwhile, the Saif Ali Khan, Tabu and Alaya F-starrer Jawaani Jaaneman also saw a low second weekend of Rs3.50 crore nett. This takes its overall total to only Rs23.18 crore nett.
