Twitter India today revealed that Tamil superstar Vijay’s Neyveli selfie was the most retweeted of the year.
Vijay had shared the tweet on 10 February in response to raids by the income-tax department of the government of India on him and his financier.
As Twitter published its recap for the year with the hashtag ThisHappened2020, Vijay’s tweet with over 145,700 retweets was found to be the one with the most.
The selfie was shared by Vijay after he was rigorously questioned for two days by income-tax officers in connection with the profits of his Tamil blockbuster, Bigil (2019).
Vijay was shooting for his upcoming film Master (2021) in Neyveli in Tamil Nadu when he shared the tweet with a picture of himself with thousands of his fans in the background.
The tweet immediately went viral and trended for weeks.
Today, when Twitter revealed that Vijay’s Neyveli selfie was the most retweeted of the year, the joy of the star's fans knew no bounds and they celebrated with a new hashtag, VijayRuledTwitter2020.
Twitter also revealed that Mahesh Babu’s Sarileru Neekevvaru (2020) was the most used Telugu movie hashtag of the year. Suriya’s Soorarai Pottru (2020) was the most shared Tamil movie hashtag.
On the career front, Vijay is awaiting the release of Master. The film, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, stars Vijay as a college professor with Vijay Sethupathi as the antagonist. Malavika Mohanan, who made her Tamil debut in Rajinikanth’s Petta (2019), plays the leading lady.
Earlier this year, during the pandemic-induced lockdown, some reports claimed that Master would skip a theatrical release and go directly to an OTT platform. However, the makers insisted that Master would only be released in theatres.
