The upcoming Netflix film, directed by Vikramaditya Motwane, has the famous director and veteran actor playing alternative versions of themselves for a terse and tense thriller.

After Neena and Masaba Gupta, it’s the turn of filmmaker Anurag Kashyap and actor Anil Kapoor to take to the screen as alternative versions of themselves for Vikramaditya Motwane’s AK vs AK (2020).

While the mother-daughter pair starred in a lighter, breezier web-series titled Masaba Masaba, Kashyap and Kapoor find themselves in darker territory.

In the feature, the filmmaker and the actor find themselves at odds at an industry panel where they have a very public fight. Later, Kashyap sets up a proposal for Kapoor. His daughter Sonam has been abducted and is missing, and he has 10 hours to find her.

The filmmaker also brings up some rules for the veteran. He can’t call the police or enlist anyone’s help, and the camera will keep filming his quest, no matter what happens.

The dark and gritty feature pits the two famous personalities against each other and they seem ready to come to blows quite a few times. Interestingly, Kapoor played a character who abducts a famous singing star in Fanney Khan (2018) to advance his daughter’s career. Here, the plot is more meta, borrowing from their personal lives and even casting Kapoor’s real-life daughter in the film.

Of course, while the film touches upon pertinent issues like nepotism and the all-important ‘insider-outsider’ debate, it is eventually a personal grudge between two men that descends into an all-out battle, which is largely amplified for the sake of the film.

AK vs AK, produced by Motwane’s Andolan Films, is due to be released on 24 December on Netflix. Watch the trailer below and let us know if you are keen to watch the film.
