Folk music such as powada ballads have been used by artists for centuries to shed light on serious issues plaguing society but now it seems that rap music has picked up the baton in India. We have been seeing many independent artists using the American musical form to deliver social commentary.

Filmmaker, singer and music composer Avdhoot Gupte has come up with a new rap song 'Jaat' which confronts caste discrimination. Lyrics are the most important element in hip hop and here lyricist Sameer Samant doesn't mince his words while calling out discrimination. Vikram Bam's music is a tour de force and the guitar riff brings to mind Gupte's famous rock song Zalzale.

Gupte, as always, is in fine form and adds a much-needed punch to the already powerful song with his vocals. The artiste, who also appears in various get-ups in the music video, effortless stays in character while mouthing his lines. All in all the song has an uplifting message about the importance of treating everyone equally.
