Coolie No 1 song 'Mummy Kassam': Varun Dhawan, Sara Ali Khan dance their hearts out in this old-school massy track

Sung by Udit Narayan and Monali Thakur, the tune harkens back to the 1990s.

'Mummy Kassam' from the Varun Dhawan and Sara Ali Khan-starrer Coolie No 1 is an old-school massy track. The peppy dance number brings to mind the film music of the 1990s. This is not surprising given that the song was choreographed by none other than Ganesh Acharya, who had worked with Govinda on several occasions.

The song is brought to life by director David Dhawan's trademark comic touch. Varun is seen dancing on the top of a fleet of cars with Khan matching his steps beat for beat. The main selling point for the song is Udit Narayan's expressive vocals. The veteran crooner leads the charge as he has done innumerable times in his heyday. Narayan is in his element here and completely owns the song. After his Super 30 (2019) tune 'Jugraafiya', the legend has once again proven that, if given a chance, he can still be the singing voice of young actors.

Thakur, who is known for her sweet voice, impresses with her robust rendition. Thakur has mostly sung romantic songs, so it is refreshing to hear her in a masala entertainer.

The sense of nostalgia is evident in Tanishk Bagchi's music too. From the use of the dholak, whose beats feature in many Govinda songs, to the harmonium, Bagchi has tried to recreate every aspect of that bygone era. And he succeeds to some extent.

Ikka Singh and Shabbir Ahmed's lyrics are quite substandard but then again lyrics have always been of secondary concern in Dhawan's songs.

Although 'Mummy Kassam' cannot rival the songs from the 1990s from which it takes inspiration, it is still a decent massy dance number.

Coolie No 1 is a remake of the Govinda and Karisma Kapoor-starrer of the same name that was released in 1995.

The film will be released on 25 December on Amazon Prime Video.
