The trailer of Mainak Bhaumik’s upcoming film Cheeni delves into a complex mother-daughter relationship. Starring Aparajita Adhya and Madhumita Sarkar, the emotional trailer is packed with humour and intergenerational conflict.
The trailer opens with Cheeni (Sarkar) and her mother (Adhya) ogling at Tiger Shroff on a television screen and calling him hot. Cheeni then begins narrating the story of her mother who, at the age of 50, has started enjoying her second youth.
Cheeni recalls her childhood days when her mother’s temper, as well as her own penchant for tantrums, made it evident that it was better for them to stay apart. However, the sudden transformation of the everyday housewife, who once screamed at her daughter for eating meat in the household shrine, into a woman who dons modern clothes and craves lavish dishes baffles Cheeni.
The film appears interesting up to this point with Cheeni and her boyfriend (Sourav Das) attempting to manage the neighbours’ reactions to her mother’s seemingly outrageous activities. However, the eventual revelation of the older woman’s troubled past gives away the plot and makes it apparent that it was her abusive husband’s death that sparked her metamorphoses and infused her with a lust for life.
The trailer is filled with intense dramatic moments that highlight Cheeni and her mother’s dominating personalities. However, while the duo is mostly at loggerheads with each other, a single shot of them enjoying the rain while holding hands suggests a happy ending.
Like most of Bhaumik’s recent films, Cheeni deals with complexities in the lives of urban characters.
Cheeni is slated to be released in theatres on Christmas.
