Skateboarding is not a popular sport in India. There are few training centres even in the metropolitan cities for enthusiasts who want to learn skateboarding. But now we are getting a film on this niche sport.

Netflix has acquired the rights to a coming-of-age film called Desert Dolphin. The film's story revolves around a teenage girl, Prerna, from rural India and how her life changes completely when she is introduced to the sport of skateboarding.

The film will also show Prerna's struggles and how she fights all the odds to compete in the national skateboarding championship.

For this film, the producers constructed a skatepark in Khempur-Mavli near Udaipur in Rajasthan. The skatepark is now open to the public and is becoming a training ground for skateboarders from all over the country.

Desert Dolphin is directed by first-time director Manjari Makijany and stars Rachel Saanchita Gupta and Shafin Patel alongside Amrit Maghera and yesteryear legend Waheeda Rehman. The actress was last seen in Kamal Haasan's Vishwaroopam 2 (2018) where she played his mother.

The film's music has been scored by popular duo Salim-Sulaiman. Desert Dolphin is produced by Skatepark Films and Mac Productions. Netflix plans to release the film next year.
