The Disney Company’s live-action epic Mulan is no longer headed for a major theatrical release. The film will skip most of the world’s movie theatres and go directly to the company’s own streaming platform next month, the media giant said on Tuesday.

"Customers will have to pay an additional US $29.99 on top of the cost of the monthly subscription to rent Mulan," Disney chief executive Bob Chapek said.

“Mulan will be released Sept 4 in movie theatres in areas that do not currently have the Disney+ platform and where movie theatres are back in business," Chapek added.

Originally set for a 27 March release, the live-action remake of the animated Disney classic of the same name was one of the first major films to be affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The film's release was first shifted to 21 August. Then last month Disney postponed the release again without setting a new date.

Reportedly made on a $200 million budget, Mulan stars Yifei Liu in the title role.
