The trailer of Joydeep Mukherjee’s upcoming film Detective (2020) offers glimpses of a humourous period drama based on its protagonist, Mahimchandra’s quest to prove himself a worthy detective. Inspired by Rabindranath Tagore’s story by the same name, the film features Anirban Bhattacharya as Mahimchandra and Ambarish Bhattacharya as his accomplice, Hutason.
The trailer begins with Mahimchandra’s cry for a suitably complicated case which would help him prove his prowess as a detective. His pronunciation of the word ‘case’, his loud facial expressions and body language clearly establishes him as a desperate amateur who wants to put his skills to test.
Mahimchandra's sidekick, friend and confidante Hutason is quite baffled by his quest for a perfect case which will challenge his intelligence. However, Manmath (Saheb Bhattacharjee), a revolutionary, eventually leads him to his ideal case as Mahimchandra claims to see a potential criminal in him.
The trailer is filled with comical moments along with snippets of conflicts involving Manmath. The latter seems to be creating enough drama in his life, while Mahimchandra often slips up in his role as a detective at the opportune moment.
He also seems to share an interesting equation with his wife Sudhamukhi (Ishaa Saha). There are glimpses of romance as well even though Mahimchandra carefully conceals his secrets from his wife.
Going by the trailer, the film seems to have captured the essence of the pre-independence era, specially in the look of the characters and the music, which has been composed by Joy Sarkar. Detective also presents Anirban in a completely new avatar, and Saheb as a complex yet important character.
Due to the pandemic, Detective will be released digitally. The film will premiere on Hoichoi on 14 August, under the new category, 'First Day First Show'.
