Director Maqbool Khan’s Khaali Peeli (2020) sees Ishaan Khatter playing a taxi driver. In other words, he literally takes people for a ride. But the film is about what happens when the cabbie is taken for a ride by a stranger.
Going by the teaser, which has just been released, Khatter plays a happy-go-lucky cabbie. Just out of jail, he soon becomes a suspect in a 'half-murder' (grievous assault) case. His life gets more complicated when a cunning young woman (Ananya Panday) hails his cab. She is carrying money, other valuables and a gun.
There are some crooks after the young woman and she and the cabbie are forced to flee for their lives. The guy curses his luck for having got involved in the mess.
Khaali Peeli is a humorous thriller about a cat-and-mouse chase. The intriguing story and witty content in the teaser whet your appetite for the film which seems to have shades of Ek Chaalis Ki Last Local (2007).
Ishaan Khatter looks impressive in the role of a tapori (street-smart) taxi driver. Ananya Panday shows promise. The film also stars Jaideep Ahlawat, who became popular with his brilliant act in Paatal Lok (2020). He isn’t shown in the teaser, however.
This is Maqbool Khan’s second directorial venture after Lanka (2011), which starred Manoj Bajpayee, Arjan Bajwa and Tia Bajpai.
