Indian classical music legend Pandit Jasraj dies at 90


In a career spanning almost eight decades, several prestigious honours were conferred on Pandit Jasraj, including the Padma Vibhushan.

Renowned Indian classical vocalist Pandit Jasraj died today in New Jersey in the USA. He was 90. The cause of death was not immediately revealed.

News of the musician's death was shared by his daughter Durga Jasraj, according to the Press Trust of India news agency.

With a musical career spanning almost eight decades, Pandit Jasraj was a recipient of various awards and honours, including the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan.

Many of his classical and semi-classical vocal recitals were released as albums and also used in film soundtracks.

Jasraj sang for a few films as well, like his father-in-law V Shantaram's Ladki Sahyadri Ki (1966). His wife Madhura is Shantaram's daughter.

He also sang a duet with another legend of Hindustani classical music, Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, for the film Birbal My Brother (1975).

Well-known film music director duo Jatin-Lalit are his nephews while actresses Sulakshana Pandit and Vijayta Pandit are his nieces. His daughter Durga Jasraj used to be a well-known television personality.

Jasraj taught music in India, Canada and the USA and has a minor planet between Mars and Jupiter named after him. The International Astronomical Union (IAU) named planet 2006 VP32 (number 300128), discovered on 11 November 2006, as 'Panditjasraj'.
