Sona Mohapatra has rendered an ode to Indian women through her latest song, ‘Raat Ke Musaafir.’ Produced by Ultra Media and Entertainment, the song showcases the struggles Indian women face in the context of safe spaces. It has been released today on Independence Day since it deals with the issue of freedom for the women of India.
Explaining why she was glad to accept the project, Sona Mohapatra said in a statement, “‘Raat Ke Musaafir’ immediately struck a chord with me. The narrative, both visually and in song, was about women's right to public spaces, be it night or day, and their right to be able to dream freely and make those dreams come true!”
The singer believes the time is right for such a song. “There could be no better spirit to celebrate this Independence Day and one that has come right in the middle of a scary pandemic where it has become even more evident that in order for humankind to get through to the other side, all genders need to work together, with mutual respect, in harmony, because there is a much bigger force at play that no one can control,” she said.
‘Raat Ke Musaafir’ features actresses Sakshi Hasija and Anupama Sunehria as a cab driver aspiring to become a civil servant and a hockey player, respectively.
The song video has been directed by Ajay Govind who has also written the lyrics while the music has been composed by Nitin K Menon. Speaking of the reason to release the song on Independence Day, Ajay Govind said, “We decided to release the song on Independence Day because freedom is a core theme that runs in the song. Eventually the song is a take on everyone's freedom to be themselves and find others in that journey who will support you.”
