Filmmaker Nishikant Kamat, who is currently undergoing treatment at Hyderabad's AIG Hospital after being diagnosed with chronic liver disease, is critical but stable, according to an official statement issued by the hospital today.

“Mr Nishikant Kamat (50 years, male) was brought to AIG Hospitals, Gachibowli, Hyderabad on 31 July with jaundice and abdominal distention. He has been diagnosed with chronic liver disease and other secondary infections,” said the statement.

Sharing the current status of his condition, the hospital added, “He has been in the intensive care unit (ICU) for continuous monitoring under supervision of the multi-disciplinary team of senior consultants comprising of gastroenterologists, hepatologists, critical care and others. His condition is critical but stable. We wish him a speedy recovery.”

It was reported yesterday that Kamat was admitted to hospital on Tuesday for chronic liver disease. According to reports, the director had suffered from liver cirrhosis in the past, which had now relapsed.

Kamat made a mark with his directorial debut Dombivali Fast (2005). The film helped actor Sandeep Kulkarni gain fame through his portrayal of Madhav Apte.

Commenting on Kamat’s illness, Kulkarni told the daily, The Times Of India, “I know Nishikant very well. He is one of the popular filmmakers in Marathi and Bollywood industries. I made my debut in the Marathi industry with Sandeep Sawant’s Shwaas (2004) but I got recognition in the entertainment industry after Nishikant Kamat’s Dombivali Fast. I know Nishikant. He is very strong and I know he will get through this tough phase. My prayers and best wishes for his speedy recovery.”
