Being a trailblazer is never easy. Janhvi Kapoor’s Gunjan Saxena learns this the hard way in the upcoming biopic of the first woman Indian Air Force officer to enter a combat zone. The trailer of Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl (2020), directed by Sharan Sharma, shows her determined path since childhood to become Flight Lieutenant Gunjan Saxena.
The two-and-a-half-minute trailer opens with shots of battle and taunts of going back to the kitchen. “Hamari zimmedari hai iss desh ki raksha karna, tumhe barabari ka mauka dena nahi [It is our responsibility to defend our country, not to give you a chance for equality],” she is told in no uncertain terms.
But Gunjan has always dreamed of becoming a pilot and thanks to the unwavering, measured support of her father (Pankaj Tripathi), she is encouraged to forge ahead, especially after her brother joins the army.
But once she joins the air force, she realizes that she has another battle ahead of her. As the lone woman on the base, she has no toilet or changing room. Furthermore, her superiors perceive her as weak, effectively grounding her flying time.
Her time in the Kargil war, however, proves her mettle once and for all. Kapoor, in her second lead role, takes on the physical and mental challenges Gunjan faced all those years ago.
The film, which also stars Angad Bedi, Vineet Kumar, Ayesha Raza and Manav Vij, is due to be streamed on Netflix on 12 August. Watch the trailer below and let us know if you are keen to see the film.
