We may not have seen him on the big screen for over eight months now, but there is no mistaking the voice of Shah Rukh Khan as he introduces us to the Indian cricket team's 'lucky charm' Zoya Solanki (Sonam Kapoor Ahuja), born on the very day when Kapil Dev and his team recorded their epic 1983 World Cup victory in England.
Raghuvir Yadav and Shankar Mahadevan's vocals narrate Zoya's journey, from bystander to talisman for the current Indian team. The more time she spends with them, the more their fortunes seem to change. Suddenly the team's losing streak turns into wins.
As the team and fans buy into the lucky charm of Zoya, she is elevated to goddess status, complete with cricket pads. The fictitious scenario is enough to make you laugh, until you realize how superstitious the country can be when it comes to the sport of cricket.
Amitabh Bhattacharya's lyrics take us through Zoya's turn with the team and our fascination with superstition with his trademark wry humour. Composers Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy keep the ditty light and hummable; it's almost like the theme for the rom com starring Kapoor Ahuja and Dulquer Salmaan.
The song goes a long way in establishing Zoya's place as patron saint of the team.
