Suriya’s Kaappaan (2019), despite being panned heavily by critics, managed to gross around Rs44 crore worldwide in its opening weekend.
Kaappaan review: A dull, long-drawn action film with no soul
Trade analyst Trinath confirmed that the film has grossed approximately Rs44 crore worldwide in its opening weekend. It performed exceptionally well in Tamil Nadu and Kerala apart from few overseas territories.
In the Telugu states, Kaappaan, which was released as Bandobast, ended up as a damp squib, registering the lowest opening for Suriya ever in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
In the film, Suriya was seen playing a bodyguard to Mohanlal’s prime minister’s character. Directed by KV Anand, Kaappaan marks the first onscreen collaboration of Suriya and Mohanlal. In a recent Facebook live chat, Suriya opened up about working with Mohanlal in the film.
"He is the best (actor) we have in our country. We have learned about acting through his movies. I was introduced to Malayalam cinema with Kilukkam (1991), Kireedam (1989), Spadikam (1995) and all his wonderful films."
Suriya said he takes reference for his films from his work. While most actors struggle to perform in front of a camera, Suriya said that even if there is a magnifying lens right in front of his face, Mohanlal will make it disappear.
Suriya is currently shooting for Sudha Kongara’s Soorarai Pottru. The film, based on the life of Captain GR Gopinath – founder of the budget airline Air Deccan, sees Suriya team up with a female filmmaker for the first time.
