Interesting choice of glimpses from the film and promises of twists on various layers comprise the trailer of Sayantan Ghosal’s upcoming detective film Satyanweshi Byomkesh.
Featuring Parambrata Chatterjee as the popular Bengali sleuth Byomkesh Bakshi and Rudranil Ghosh as his sole companion and author of the accounts of all his cases, Ajit Bandyopadhyay, Satyanweshi Byomkesh is based on Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay’s story Mognomainak.
Ajit’s narration in the trailer makes it clear that the film is set in the Calcutta of 1971, a period of tremendous political unrest. The hint of the unrest is made even more intriguing with the dramatic introduction of various characters played by Suprovat Das, Gargee Roy Chowdhury, Ayoshi Talukdar and Anjan Dutt.
Throughout the trailer, the suspense revolves around the character of Hena Mullick. While Byomkesh keeps his investigation on around her identity, a few other characters fear to divulge any secret about her.
While both Byomkesh and Ajit seem to be in continuous conflict with Das’s character, Dutt’s character perhaps brings more complexities to the narrative.
It is also evident that the plot of the story goes beyond the boundaries of Calcutta, bringing bits and pieces of the Bangladeshi liberation war into the scenario.
While Chatterjee seems to be portraying a feisty and young Byomkesh, Ajit’s characterisation rather appears mature, through their short glimpses of conversations.
At the end, the trailer makes it clear that the plot revolves around the death of Hena Mullick, who probably posed as a threat to certain criminals.
Along with the edgy cinematic composition and appealing colour tone, the trailer builds anticipation for a multi-layered story, which is the true essence of any Byomkesh Bakshi story. Satyanweshi Byomkesh is slated for release on 2 October.
