Director Chandrakant Kanse made his directorial debut with the Marathi movie Dagdi Chawl (2015), inspired — if that's the word — by the story of gangster-turned-politician Arun Gawli.
The film's title stemmed from the chawl where Gawli had a room. Makrand Deshpande essayed the character of Gawli, known popularly in the area as Daddy.
Now, the makers have officially announced the second part of the movie in a unique way. Deshpande, along with the film’s producer Sangeeta Ahir and Gawli’s wife Asha, walked in to join the Dagdi Chawl Navratri celebration on Navami day, 7 October.
Deshpande was dressed as Gawli and looked very much like the gangster-turned-politician. He performed the puja of the goddess’s idol.
Along with Deshpande, Dagdi Chawl starred Ankush Chaudhari and Pooja Sawant as lovers. The two will also be part of Dagdi Chawl 2. The first film saw Chaudhari play a young man who is sucked into the underworld; that film revolved around Gawli's character. Like the first film, this one will also be directed by Chandrakant Kanse.
A couple of years ago, a Hindi biopic of Gawli titled Daddy (2017) had hit the screens. Directed by Ashim Ahluwalia, the film saw Arjun Rampal get into the shoes of Gawli. The film also starred Aishwarya Rajesh.
