It was a day when Mumbaikars experienced pain and anguish as hundreds of trees in the Aarey forest in the city were cut down by authorities in order to make a carshed for the upcoming Metro.

As expected, netizens poured their emotional reactions at the visuals of cutting down of these many trees. This also included a section of the Hindi film industry including the likes of Karan Johar, Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan and Farhan Akhtar.

Describing the incident as a ‘massacre,’ Johar said, “Massacre is what this is! We are our own worst enemy! Infrastructure can never precede nature! We need to STOP!”

Akhtar and Richa Chadha highlighted the timing of the event saying. “Cutting trees at night is a pathetic attempt at trying to get away with something even those doing it know is wrong,” said Akhtar. Chadha wrote, “Why were trees cut in the dead of the night? Who gets rich(er) because of this metro car shed? Everything about this is shady from the get go, including how the first signatures for the tree felling were obtained.”

Dia Mirza pointed out how the 15 day period ordered by the court was not followed. She wrote, “There is supposed to be a 15 day waiting period after permission is granted and notice has been uploaded on official website. But there is no waiting here. Our trees are being cut as citizens desperately plead to STOP this!”

Last month, popular names like Amitabh Bachchan and Akshay Kumar indirectly supported the metro car shed on social media. They are, obviously, mum over the whole issue. Some time back, Shraddha Kapoor had attended a protest at Aarey to save the forest. She hasn't shared her reaction as of yet.
