Director Abhishek Pathak’s Ujda Chaman (2018), which stars Sunny Singh Nijjar, was earlier supposed to be released on 7 November. But the makers have now decided to release the film a week earlier, on 1 November.
They have taken this decision after the makers of the Ayushmann Khurrana-starrer Bala (2019) decided to advance their film's release by a week, from 15 November to 7 November. This would have meant that the two films, both dealing with the subject of a man who loses self-confidence as he begins balding prematurely, would have clashed at the box office.
Speaking about the decision, Pathak told the tabloid Mumbai Mirror, “Since I had announced my film first, it is better to release a week before them and enjoy a solo release.”
Both films are also currently involved in a legal battle after the makers of Ujda Chaman took the makers of Bala to court for alleged resemblance with their film. Ujda Chaman is the official remake of the Kannada movie Ondu Motteya Kathe (2017).
The makers of the two films also saw an unusual war of posters on social media earlier this month. After Bala’s poster, in which Khurrana’s bald pate is being watered, was released, the same type of poster was quickly made and released by the makers of Ujda Chaman.
