Box office: Laal Kaptaan, other new releases have dull opening, War continues to rule

The Hollywood movie Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil earned more than any of the nine new Hindi releases.

Yesterday saw the release of as many as nine Hindi films — Laal Kaptaan, Ghost, P Se Pyaar F Se Faraar, Gumnaami, Jacqueline I Am Coming, Junction Varanasi, Life Mein Time Hi Nahi Hai Kisi Ko, Officer Arjun Singh IPS and Yaaram.

Of these, only Laal Kaptaan, Ghost and P Se Pyaar F Se Faraar made collections that could be reported. But that does not mean anything because even these films made dismal collections.

Laal Kaptaan made a mere Rs50 lakh nett, according to BoxOfficeIndia.com. Despite featuring a known name like Saif Ali Khan, the film is going virtually unnoticed because the promotions have been almost non-existent. Vikram Bhatt’s Ghost and P Se Pyaar F Se Faraar made a paltry Rs35 lakh and Rs20 lakh, respectively.

Meanwhile, Hollywood movie Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil, which was also released yesterday, made Rs70 lakh nett. Although this number is also low, it’s still higher than any of the Hindi films that were released with it.

The dull scenario of the new releases has obviously been to the benefit of War, starring Hrithik Roshan and Tiger Shroff. The film, which entered the third week yesterday, made a decent Rs2.75 crore nett on the day. War, directed by Siddharth Anand, has so far made Rs275.25 crore nett at the domestic box office, just shy of Kabir Singh’s lifetime collection of Rs276.34 crore, currently the highest score of 2019.
