Director Leena Yadav is set to take the reins of the Geena Davis-led feature, The Cowgirl's Last Ride. According to the website Deadline.com, Davis has been confirmed to play the lead for the project backed by Los Angeles-based production house Resonate Entertainment.
Davis, who shot to fame with The Fly (1986), won an Academy award for Best Supporting Actress for The Accidental Tourist (1988). The actress is also known for her performance in Ridley Scott's Thelma & Louise (1991), which earned her another Academy award nomination for Best Actress.
Deadline.com revealed that the story will revolve around an ageing Texas cowgirl who runs away from her nursing home to live the rest of her life on her own terms. With her only son in pursuit, the woman travels across America, first on horse, then in a car.
In some ways, the storyline bears a resemblance to Davis's biggest hit, Thelma & Louise. The project is written by Kris Hunt, who based it on people he met during his life.
Resonate Entertainment was formed last year by Susan Cartsonis, Suzanne Farwell and Brent Emery. The film will also see Aseem Bajaj, producer of Leena Yadav's Parched (2016), come on board as co-producer.
Speaking on the project, Cartsonis was quoted by Deadline.com as saying, "We are thrilled to work with Geena Davis, who I have known for over 25 years starting when I was an executive at 20th Century Fox. Now with my Resonate partners, plus Leena and Aseem, we get to make some new history with our creative collaboration on Cowgirl’s."
