Swanand Kirkire to play a police inspector in Girlz

The lyricist-turned-actor was impressive in his last two Marathi films Chumbak (2018) and Bhaai: Vyakti Kee Valli (2019). 

Swanand Kirkire won many a hearts with his performance as the lead actor in the Marathi movie Chumbak (2018). Following this, he was seen in Mahesh Manjrekar’s Bhaai: Vyakti Kee Valli (2019). It was a biopic on the legendary humorist PL Deshpande where he played the musical maestro Kumargandharva. 

Now, keeping in tune with playing diverse characters in Marathi cinema, Kirkire will now be seen in Vishal Devrukhkar’s Girlz (2019) in an unexpected role of a police inspector. Interestingly, the producer of Girlz, Naren Kumar was also the producer for Chumbak. 

Kumar shared the story of casting Kirkire in the movie in an official statement. He said that his relation with Kirkire goes a long way and their friendship blossomed further during the shoot of Chumbak. During one conversation, Kumar brought out the topic of Girlz. Kirkire told him that he would love to be a part of this film too.

During the scripting, Kumar felt that Kirkire will suit the character of the cop. After giving it a thought, Kirkire agreed and even agreed to shoot at around 3am in the night. “In this industry few people keep their word and Swanand is one of them. I thank him for honouring my request,” said Kumar. 

Speaking about his role, Kirkire said, “Although I am playing a cameo in the film, it is an important character. It is a different role for me; one which I haven’t played before. But Naren trusted me and I was able to play the character.” 

Starring Ankita Lande, Ketaki Narayan and Anvita Phaltankar, Girlz will be released on 29 November.
