Director Sujoy Ghosh’s Kahaani (2012) is known for actress Vidya Balan’s impressive performance. But despite her presence as the lead, the character of Bob Biswas received cult status as did actor Saswata Chatterjee for his breakthrough role in Hindi cinema.

Now, a film based on the character Bob Biswas has been announced by Shah Rukh Khan under his banner Red Chillies Entertainment. But instead of Chatterjee, actor Abhishek Bachchan will be playing Biswas. The banner announced the project on Twitter while sharing a picture of Bachchan and Khan. Bachchan is wearing a cap with the letter ‘B.’

The film will be the directorial debut of Diya Annapurna Ghosh, who is the daughter of Sujoy Ghosh. She was one of the assistant directors in Sujoy’s last film Badla (2019), a thriller starring Amitabh Bachchan and Taapsee Pannu.

Although Sujoy Ghosh isn’t directing Bob Biswas, he is on board as the writer and co-producer for the project. He confirmed his dual roles to us through a text message.

For those not in the know, the character of Bob Biswas was a contract killer in Kahaani. He had a peculiar habit of gunning down his targets after greeting them sweetly by saying, “Nomoshkar.” The Red Chillies tweet also began with the word ‘Nomoshkar,' which reveals that the film  is a spin-off of the character from Kahaani. The publicist for the film has also confirmed the same.

It will be interesting to see if Biswas will once again be a negative character.

Like Kahaani, Bob Biswas will also be shot in Kolkata. Sujoy has already started work on the upcoming film. He shared a photograph of Kalighat station where a harrowing sequence from the Vidya Balan-starrer was shot.
