Thalaivi first look teaser: Kangana Ranaut captures Jayalalithaa's posture, not her presence

The actress's first look as the late former chief minister of Tamil Nadu was released on Saturday, November 25.

For a teaser that has been awaited earnestly across the south of India, Thalaivi sees Kangana Ranaut step into the iconic footsteps of the former chief minister of Tamil Nadu, J Jayalalithaa. The film, directed by Vijay and produced by Vishnu Vardhan Induri and Shaailesh R Singh, is set to release on 26 June 2020.

The teaser opens with a shot of Ranaut as the young Jayalalithaa stepping into the shot of her debut film, Vennira Adai (1965). While Ranaut has certainly put on some weight for the role, she seems a little ill-suited for the energetic dance number. Not known for her dancing abilities, Ranaut, despite her best efforts, seems a little lacklustre here.

The teaser smoothly shifts to the stage of a political rally, with the now famililar silhouette of J Jayalalithaa poised to greet the crowds. The stage also carries the date, 24 June 1991, the day she took oath as the chief minister of Tamil Nadu. The prosthetic heavy look does match the former chief minister's appearance, but shows the artificial nature as well. Perhaps, that will be fixed later.

Regardless, the teaser is built on an impressive background score by GV Prakash, and captures the crescendo that accompanied J Jayalalithaa's personality and stature.

The film is set to be released on 26 June 2020. Watch the first look video below and let us know if you are keen to watch the film.
