Veteran Telugu actor Nagarjuna will play an archaeologist in Ayan Mukerji's upcoming superhero trilogy, Brahmastra. The film features Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, and Amitabh Bachchan in key roles.

Nagarjuna and Amitabh Bachchan are teaming up together again after 17 years. The duo have been part of films like Khuda Gawah (1992) and Agni Varsha (2002).

Directed by Ayan Mukerji, Brahmastra is a superhero film revolving around a mysterious weapon named Brahmastra. According to a report in the tabloid Mumbai Mirror, Nagarjuna is likely to play an archaeologist who stumbles upon the ancient weapon on a dig.

"Nagarjuna’s character, along with his students, undertakes an expedition to restore an ancient temple along the banks of the Ganga," a source was quoted as saying by the paper.

The crew shot in Varanasi back in June, and the location forms a key part of the film's plotline. The source also reportedly said, "An important event leads Shiva (Kapoor) and Isha (Bhatt) to Nagarjuna. The story unfolds in the ancient temple city before moving to the Himalayas.

"The film’s antagonists, Mouni Roy and Saurav Gurjar, also come into play because of Nagarjuna’s track. The adventure kicks off after all of them come face-to-face in Varanasi. A high-octane action sequence featuring them was shot earlier in the year."

Set for release in the summer of 2020, Brahmastra will see Ranbir Kapoor play a superhero for the first time in his career.
