Independent filmmaker Sanal Kumar Sasidharan’s Chola (2019) is all set for release in theatres in Kerala on 6 December.

Chola, produced by Joju George under the banner Appu Pathu Pappu Production House, stars Joju George, Nimisha Sajayan and Akhil Viswanath.

The film will also be released in some limited centres outside Kerala.

Chola is about an adolescent schoolgirl and her teenage lover who meet across the village by dawn to set out for a trip to the town. Infuriated by the presence of a stranger with the boy, the girl expresses her hesitance. However, the boy convinces her that the stranger will leave them at the bus stop and so the trio begins its journey.

Passing through the hilly peripheral suburbs, the three reach the heart of the city. Seeing the tall buildings and shopping areas, the girl is astounded and excited. Resuming their journey home in the evening, things take a wild turn, as some intriguing incidents unfold.

Chola was premiered at the 76th Venice International Film Festival in the Orizzonti Competition section. Nimisha Sajayan received the Kerala State Film award for Best Actress while actor-producer Joju George won the Kerala State Film award for Best Character Actor.

Sanal Kumar had hit the national headlines two years ago when his film Sexy Durga (2018) ran into trouble with the Central Board of Film Certification and was pulled at the last minute from the 48th International Film Festival of India (IFFI).
