After Badhaai Ho, Neena Gupta to play Akshay Kumar’s mother in Rohit Shetty’s Sooryavanshi

Actress Neena Gupta has been signed for Rohit Shetty’s upcoming cop drama Sooryavanshi (2020), which features Akshay Kumar in the lead. She told the tabloid Mumbai Mirror that she will essay the role of his mother. .

However, Gupta said that her character won’t be a stereotypical mother that one generally sees in commercial cop dramas. “This is an interesting role because it isn’t the stereotypical mother who asks his son about food, marriage etc., but has several dimensions. There is a new temperament to the mother, and you will get to see a very different dynamic between Akshay, Katrina and me,” she said.

Gupta is generally associated with unconventional movies. But despite that she has been a keen observer of Shetty’s films. “This is a new, sweet and interesting space that I am looking to explore. I am happy that more people will get to see my work. Rohit has made some amazing films which have been appreciated by the audience,” she added.

The actress’s career got a boost with the super successful Badhaai Ho last year, which featured Ayushmann Khurrana and Sanya Malhotra in the lead. The film, directed by Amit Ravindernath Sharma, remains close to Gupta.

“Badhaai Ho has given me a hit that I have wanted ever since I came into the industry 35-40 years ago. I have done many films before this, but not a lot of people saw my work,” added Gupta. The actress was signed for the film after she had put up a post on Instagram seeking work.

In Sooryavanshi, Akshay will play the titular character of an Anti-Terrorist Squad officer. Katrina Kaif plays his wife in the movie. Shooting for the film commences today.
