Taapsee Pannu's choice of scripts seems to be improving with every film. The trailer for Game Over sees the actress playing a woman trapped in her and, perhaps, every woman's worst nightmare. Directed by Ashwin Saravanan, the multilingual film is set for release on 14 June.
The trailer begins with a paranoid Taapsee Pannu suffering from sudden panic attacks caused by dark corridors and darkness in general. 'Anniversary reaction' is a psychological reaction to a horrid event that recurs when the victim goes through a similar set of events around the anniversary of the original happening. That definition gives away the fact that Pannu's character Sapna suffers through a violent attack or molestation early in the film which shapes her reactions.
With the psychological flaw, the arrival of a mysterious serial killer who is murdering young women, a caring housekeeper, and the obsession with video games makes for the rest of the sharp trailer.
While it reveals some key points of interest, the trailer does play things close to the chest. It is difficult to ascertain the timeline of the events. For instance, the second part of the trailer sees Pannu's character bound in a wheelchair, having suffered injuries, and unable to walk. This happens at the same time as a killer walks into her room with a bloodied sword.
The title Game Over refers to the tagline for several video games. These games form a key part of the film, as referenced by the burning controller towards the end of the trailer. The use of virtual reality as a mode to escape her own fears is also an interesting addition to Pannu's character.
With its sharp cuts, an ominous background score, and Taapsee Pannu in the lead, the film does offer the right amount of chills for a thrill seeker. Directed by Ashwin Saravanan, Game Over is produced by Y Not Studios, and will be released simultaneously in Tamil, Hindi and Telugu.
The film is scheduled for a 14 June release.
