Celebrated Malayalam filmmaker Rajesh Nair has bought the remake rights of Shiboprosad Mukherjee and Nandita Roy’s upcoming film Konttho before its theatrical release.
The director was immensely impressed by the trailer of the film and is fairly sure that the film will follow the trail of success of the director duo’s last film Haami that turned out to be the highest grossing Bengali film of 2018.
An ardent fan of Mukherjee and Roy, Nair said, “I am intrigued by the magic they create on screen. I watched Konttho’s trailer and I am convinced that this is going to be a successful film. The story is so relatable to everyone irrespective of the language they speak in.”
Konttho is based on the inspiring real-life story of a laryngeal cancer survivor voice artiste. In the film, Mukherjee himself essays the character of voice artiste RJ Arjun Mullick, while Paoli Dam plays his wife and Jaya Ahsan will be seen in the character of a speech therapist.
Nair has already decided on the title of the film which will be called Shabdam in Malayalam and Jayasurya will be essaying the role of the protagonist in it.
An ecstatic Mukherjee stated, “Generally, the remake rights are acquired after the release of the film. It usually depends on the box office report. But Rajesh offered to remake the film right after watching the trailer. A well-known actor like Jayasurya will be playing the role of RJ Arjun Mullick. What can be more exciting than this?”
However, this is not first time that Nair has associated with the director duo. He has also bought the rights of Haami.
Mukherjee’s partner and co-director Roy said, “Konttho is a project we have been nurturing for more than a decade now. The story is very close to us and we want the film to reach out to as many people as possible. So obviously when Rajesh approached us with the idea of a Malayalam remake, we were thrilled.”
Konttho is slated for release on 10 May.
