PM Narendra Modi trailer 2: A cloaked celebration of Modi's triumphant return to the screen

"Jeetne ka maza tab aata hai, jab sab aapke haarne ki ummeed karte hain [You enjoy winning, when everyone is rooting for your failure]," says Vivek Oberoi as Narendra Modi in the new trailer for the upcoming biopic.

Whether that is a hint at the film's eventual arrival to the theatre screens after the long election ban, or a remark towards the potential return of Narendra Modi to power is not clear. What is clear is that the trailer acts as a glitzy package to the personality that is Narendra Modi. 

While the first trailer focused on the multiple traits of Modi that defined his leadership and journey through life, this new trailer is more open in its snippet of the hagiographical portrait. The trailer also pulls no punches in its barbs directed towards the current opposition, the Congress party.

As a domineering Sonia Gandhi looks on, we hear Oberoi's words saying "Magic is what the central government does. Money goes missing. Jobs go missing. Even the prime minister's voice goes missing." The last remark refers to one of Modi's infamous quips on his predecessor Manmohan Singh's silence.

The trailer also brings to light the role of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in shaping the personality of the prime minister. From training in arms to working in the community, the scenes also mark his first interaction with Amit Shah (Manoj Joshi) who would go on to be his most trusted commander in the street. 

It also paints a glorious picture of Modi on the campaign trail as he announces the end of Congress rule from Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. The film is set in the period till Modi's rise to the post of India's prime minister.

The new trailer differs from the previous one in its focus on the runup to the 2014 campaign, which saw Modi become the prime minister of India. In many ways, this also acts as a double indemnity with the victory of Modi-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) suggested as imminent in the recently held general elections. 

PM Narendra Modi is directed by Omung Kumar B, and will be released in theatres on 24 May.
