Well-known Hindi film producer Firoz Nadiadwala has been sentenced to three months rigorous imprisonment for delay in payment of tax deducted at source (TDS) for the fiscal year 2009-2010. A Mumbai city court awarded the sentence to him for not being able to pay an amount of Rs8.56 lakh worth TDS.
As per news agency PTI, Nadiadwala was found guilty by additional chief magistrate RS Sarkale under relevant provisions of the Income Tax Act which resulted in the imprisonment.
A complaint against the producer was registered by an income tax officer in March 2014. He had alleged in his complaint that Nadiadwala had failed to provide the exact reason for the delay in payment of the TDS amount within the stipulated time.
Nadiadwala has produced a number of well-known and successful Hindi films like Aan: Men At Work (2004), Deewane Huye Pagal (2005), Phir Hera Pheri (2006), Welcome (2007), Aarakshan (2011) and Welcome Back (2015).
Nadiadwala was in the news for a noble reason a couple of years ago after it was found that he was personally taking responsibility of the ailing actor-writer-filmmaker Neeraj Vora, who eventually passed away in 2017.
