The Ajay Devgn-Tabu-Rakul Preet Singh film De De Pyaar De has had a below-expected opening at the box office. The film, directed by Akiv Ali, his first, made around Rs8.50 crore yesterday in India, as per figures shared by BoxOfficeIndia.com.
This is the lowest opening for a film starring Ajay Devgn in the past few years. The only flop Devgn has delivered in the recent past is Baadshaho (2017). But even that film had a bigger opening than De De Pyaar De as it had made Rs10.10 crore at the ticket window.
Devgn’s earlier film this year, Total Dhamaal (2019), had made Rs15.91 crore on its first day.
The opening for De De Pyaar De is lower even than that of last week’s Student Of The Year 2 (2019). The Tiger Shroff-starrer had earned Rs11.75 crore on Day 1 despite being panned by critics.
By comparison, the reviews for the Luv Ranjan production have been much more positive. The makers will be hoping this transforms into a big jump in collections today and tomorrow. Otherwise, given the estimated budget of Rs75 crore, thanks to the extensive foreign locales used, the producers and distributors could be starring down the barrel.
Meanwhile, Student Of The Year 2 saw a huge fall in numbers on its second Friday yesterday. The Punit Malhotra-directed film could only make Rs1.50 crore in the day. The grand total of the film currently stands at Rs55.25 crore. With the film's budget estimated at Rs50 crore, SOTY2 will barely make ends meet, it appears.
