The title of the upcoming Netflix web-series refers to a missing girl, born to a Hindu mother and a Muslim father. In the future world of this dystopian drama, mixed-blood children are taken away from their parents by the government.
Actress Huma Qureshi, who is making her digital debut with the series, stars as Shalini, whose toddler daughter is taken from her and her husband Riz (Rahul Khanna). Shalini herself is forcibly taken into a cult where she is conditioned to pledge allegiance to a man named Aryavarth.
In this world, society has been sectioned off into those who fit the bill and those who don’t. It is here that Shalini begins her dangerous quest to track down her daughter. She seems to recruit the help of a young girl and a rebel played by Siddharth.
Actor Arif Zakaria seems to play a high-ranking member under Aryavarth. The mood of this trailer is understandably bleak and unsettling. Shalini frantically hunts through slums trying to find Leila, whereby others scrounge through for basic necessities like food and water.
Leila, with episodes directed by Deepa Mehta, Shanker Raman, and Pawan Kumar, will be streaming on Netflix on 14 June.
