Kabir Singh trailer: Shahid Kapoor's new-age rebel with a cause fights his demons of drugs, heartbreak, anger

Every generation has its own version of Devdas, and Sandeep Reddy Vanga's Kabir Singh appears to be cut from the same cloth.
Shahid Kapoor plays the fiery physician who spirals down a hole of drugs, alcohol and anger after losing his love.
The film's trailer captures the anger, despair, and drug-fuelled rage that drives Kapoor's character in the film.
An official remake of the cult 2017 Telugu film Arjun Reddy, directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga himself, the trailer begins with the sight of Kapoor's Kabir Singh in the midst of his obsession over ex-girlfriend Preeti (Kiara Advani).
The sudden spiral of Kabir into drug-addled, alcohol-fuelled rage is the product of his fiery passion for Preeti. The trailer captures these two sides of the coin well, as Kapoor plays up the raging stoner with his eccentric behaviour.
While Kiara Advani has little to do in the trailer, her appearance as the calm in the storm that is Kabir's life explains her character's position in the film.
The trailer uses pace and flair to build up the drama of Kabir Singh. The snapshots of violence and eccentricities are contrasted with short peeks at moments of romance and love. The end of the trailer, though, points to a hope for redemption as the 'rebel' states that he is not 'without a cause'.
While Shahid Kapoor played a similarly intoxicated character in Udta Punjab (2016), Kabir Singh sees him play up the anger more than ever. In many ways, the story reverts to type of the heartbroken obsessive lover once made famous by Salman Khan in Tere Naam (2003). It remains to be seen how the treatment changes.
Kabir Singh is set for release in theatres on 21 June 2019. Watch the trailer below and let us know how keen you are to watch this film.
