Actress Huma Qureshi is ready to commit to the cause and find her missing daughter in this first poster of the Netflix upcoming web-series Leila. Based on Prayaag Akbar's debut novel, the web-series has been written by Urmi Juvekar and co-directed by Deepa Mehta.
Qureshi makes her digital debut with Leila; she was last seen in Tamil film Kaala (2018). The actress plays Shalini, who is searching for her daughter, Leila, who disappears at the age of three. The web-series is set in the near future when residents are grouped and forced to live according to their caste and religion. Shalini's late husband Riz was Muslim.
A short announcement teaser was released this March. The web-series reminds us of the ongoing Hulu drama series, The Handmaid's Tale, which is based on Margaret Atwood's 1985 novel.
The women in Leila wear red saris, while in The Handmaid's Tale, the women wear old-fashioned red robes and dress. In the teaser, Shalini is shown living in what seems like a cult, praising someone named Aryavarth, without any emotion.
Shanker Raman and Pawan Kumar have also directed episodes of the dystopian series. Actors Siddharth, Rahul Khanna, Sanjay Suri, Arif Zakaria, and actress Seema Biswas are also part of the show.
The web-series began filming in Delhi last November and completed shooting this April. All six episodes of Leila will stream on Netflix on 14 June.
