Actress-producer Dia Mirza has been named an advocate of Sustainable Development Goals by the United Nations. The former beauty queen was earlier appointed a goodwill ambassador for the environment in 2017.

Dia Mirza, who recently shot for the web-series Kaafir in Jammu & Kashmir, will work alongside other advocates like billionaire Chinese entrepreneur Jack Ma, American actor Forest Whitaker, queen Mathilde of Belgium, Norway's prime minister Erna Solberg and Ghana's president Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in her new role.

The actress will raise awareness and help to push the issue of Sustainable Development Goals for a better environment. Dia Mirza is one of 17 global public figures who have been chosen for the cause.

In a statement, Dia Mirza spoke of the honour and privilege of being chosen as an advocate by UN secretary general António Guterres. She said, “I will strive to convey the importance of achieving sustainable development through all mediums and platforms I have access to. Our health and well-being are connected to the environment and when we harm the environment, we actually harm ourselves.

“As an advocate for the environment, my efforts will be focused on environmental protection, human and child rights. This opportunity will enable me to build partnerships and work alongside great global influencers and I truly hope to be a part of much-needed change,” she added.
