Madhuri Dixit's eyes filled with sadness, longing as Bahaar Begum in Kalank

Co-star Alia Bhatt called Bahaar Begum 'the ethereal and enigmatic enchantress'.

The curtain is off the last leading character of Kalank. Actress Madhuri Dixit Nene plays the role of Bahaar Begum in the drama based in 1940s India.

Dixit Nene called it an honour to play such a character. “It was my honour to play such an enchanting character. Here’s Bahaar Begum!,” she tweeted.

A closer look at the bottom right of the poster has a silhouette of Bahaar Begum dancing. Dixit is said to be playing a dancer in the film directed by Abhishek Varman.

The actress had famously played the role of Chandramukhi, a mujra dancer in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Devdas (2002). Bahaar Begum's role was to be played by Sridevi, but the Mom (2017) actress passed away in a freak accident in Dubai in February 2018.

Bahaar Begum has sadness and longing in her eyes. So far there is only speculation over what Kalank is about. In the poster for the character of Dev (Aditya Roy Kapur), we see a mob and house being burnt in the backdrop. The story is set in the 1940s, just before India got Independence and was partitioned. If there is an equation between Bahaar Begum and the Chaudhry family, we will know soon.

Earlier, posters for the characters of Alia Bhatt, Sonakshi Sinha, Sanjay Dutt, Aditya Roy Kapur and Varun Dhawan were revealed.

Kalank will be released on 19 April.
