The trailer of Suman Ghosh’s upcoming family drama Basu Poribaar shows a glimpse of a day in the Bose family that gathers together to celebrate the 50th anniversary of a couple played by Aparna Sen and Soumitra Chatterjee.
The trailer begins with Manjira and Pranabendu’s (Aparna and Soumitra) children returning home as Manjira muses how fast time flies. They all arrive at a palace which suggests that Soumitra is the scion of a prosperous family. Lily Chakraborty, who seems to play her mother-in-law in the film, approaches Tublu (Saswata Chatterjee) to be positive about the gathering, while the latter shows no interest. Throughout the trailer, a mystery around the character of Tublu is retained.
Jisshu Sengupta's character brings along his wife Roshni, played by Sreenanda Shankar. Another sibling, played by Kaushik Sen, also arrives with his wife (Sudipta Chakraborty). All the members are jovial at the joyous occasion until they delve deep into each other’s life and nostalgia.
While Rituparna gifts her mother her wedding saree that she kept with a lot of care for the last 50 years and cherishes a few drinks with her along with her sibling, Roshni is not too happy to have a shabby dilapidated room for her and her husband. The trailer gradually unfolds that the rooms in the palace have much more in their walls as Kaushik and Rituparna discuss their childhood memories in those rooms.
A conversation between the mother and the daughter reveal that Rituparna is separated, on the other hand, Pranabendu enquires about Tublu’s (Saswata) absence. Tublu is adamant about avoiding the entire gathering that he considers to be nothing, but a façade.
The elderly figures boast about their strong lineage and expect new descendants from their children. However, soon complications arise and Roshni scoffs at their pride in their bloodline. Roshni invites more drama in the household as she sets out to unearth the mysteries in the villa.
It is apparent that the entire family is protecting a secret about a man and if the secret is unveiled, all the façade about the family and lineage might fall apart.
The trailer gives away a lot about the film and hints to serious drama that takes place in a single day in the family. It suggests that all the characters of the family have grey shades in them and they are all, perhaps, trying to live up to an image of their faded glory.
The presence of a bunch of important actors also adds to the suspense around the story of the film. Why does Tublu freak out? Why is there a palpable anxiety in every character of the film?
The film hits the screens on 5 April and will likely come with all the answers.
