The highly anticipated trailer of Prithviraj Sukumaran's directorial debut Lucifer with Mohanlal in the title role landed on YouTube on Wednesday night. The first impression of the nearly three-and-a-half-minute trailer is that Lucifer is a political thriller high on intrigue and suspense.
Going by the trailer, it looks like the story revolves around a highly valued political leader and how he gets betrayed and killed. Mohanlal plays Lucifer Nedumpally and he is brought in as a replacement for the leader.
Lucifer takes it upon himself to find out who was responsible for the death of the leader. Manju Warrier plays the daughter of the leader.
Vivek Oberoi, who makes his debut in Malayalam cinema with this project, plays the antagonist. Tovino Thomas is seen as a young man trying his hand at politics.
The trailer has clocked close to four million views and counting. Fans have clearly warmed up to the trailer ahead of the film’s release on 28 March.
Talking about his decision to take the directorial plunge, Prithviraj Sukumaran had said in a tweet last December: “It has been a journey like no other for me. When I took up the challenge of directing a huge film like Lucifer, most of my well-wishers told me it wasn’t the wisest decision I’ve made and that as an actor, it’s a foolish investment of time."
Prithviraj further wrote that he learnt more about cinema and his craft in the last six months than in the preceding 16 years. He also thanked Mohanlal for believing in him.
“Directing you has been the absolute highlight of my career regardless of how many ever films I direct or even if I never direct again,” he said.
