Legendary comedian Chinamoy Roy dies at 79


Roy was known for his commendable performances as Bengali’s favourite Teni Da and in popular films including Basanta Bilap (1973), Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne (1969), Sriman Prithviraj (1973), Dhanyi Meye (1971), Hatey Bazarey (1967) etc.

Veteran actor Chinmoy Roy, one of the finest comedy actors of Bengali cinema, passed away on Sunday, 17 March at his Kolkata home after suffering a heart attack. He was 79.

Almost a year ago, the actor suffered critical injuries after accidentally falling from the seventh floor of his apartment. Roy’s health had been fluctuating since then.

Roy, known for his commendable performances as Bengali’s favourite Teni Da and in popular films including Basanta Bilap (1973), Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne (1969), Sriman Prithviraj (1973), Dhanyi Meye (1971), Hatey Bazarey (1967) and many other films commenced his career as a theatre actor.

He was involved with theatre group Nandikar until he was offered a role in Tapan Sinha’s Galpa Holeo Satyi in 1966. The acclaimed film brought him immediate recognition and the actor went on to act with the most important leading artistes of his time.

Roy’s incredible face acting and comic timing earned him a place in the company of Rabi Ghosh, Bhanu Bandopadhyay and other great actors who flourished in comedy acting.

The film industry is deeply saddened with his untimely death and is also regarding his demise to be the end of an era.
