The challenge of remaking a film, particularly one as iconic as Saeed Akhtar Mirza's Albert Pinto Ko Gussa Kyoon Aata Hai (1980), is to state the obvious. Soumitra Ranade's remake, featuring Nandita Das, Manav Kaul and Saurabh Shukla, sets the new-generation Albert Pinto in a milieu of capitalist corruption.
The trailer of Albert Pinto Ko Gussa Kyun Aata Hai begins with the sight of Albert Pinto (Kaul) on the run, pursued by a cop. This sets up the rest of the narrative, which seeks to find out what drove Albert Pinto, an ordinary man, to commit crimes. The trailer hints at many things that constantly push the protagonist to anguish and frustration.
The film's official synopsis states that it 'epitomises the anger felt by the common man in contemporary India — in the face of continued political, social and cultural breakdown. Albert is angry at the hypocrisy and corruption. He is angry at the mammoth fraud on humanity. He is angry with the class which rules the country. Above all he is angry with himself — for being a powerless spectator.'
This is reflected in the 15-second long diatribe that Kaul's Albert launches in the middle of a bookstore, when he calls out the hypocrisy of the quiet bystanders.
Filled with murder, intrigue, and an ensemble cast, Albert Pinto Ko Gussa Kyun Aata Hai? will be released on 12 April.
