Like the 'Bollywood' trailer that preceded it, the first song from Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota, directed by Vasan Bala, displays its love for pop culture and films in general.
Featuring the key characters of the film, Surya (Abhimanyu Dassani), Supri (Radhika Madan), and brothers Jimmy and Mani (Gulshan Devaiah in a double role), the song video barely hints of what the film is about. But that doesn't matter, since we're jamming along to composer Karan Kulkarni's catchy tunes and trying to figure how many Indian and Hollywood films Garima Obrah has included in the song. Was that a Star Wars reference there? And did Nirma detergent also get a shoutout?
Singer Benny Dayal makes hard-to-learn lyrics of this rap sound effortless and is the perfect choice for this kind of a song.
The leads Dassani and Madan are at ease here, showing their dancing skills instead of their fighting talent in the film. And the villain of the story, Mani, gets a chance to put on his dancing shoes as well.
Both Kulkarni and Obrah are in full form here and deserve extra credit for creating an unique music album. Each song on the soundtrack is made especially for the film, unlike an item song tacked on in most mainstream films. This is an infectious, catchy score that demands a repeat list.
Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota, which opened the 20th Mumbai Film Festival last year, is due to be released 21 March.
