Badla, starring Amitabh Bachchan and Taapsee Pannu, had a steady opening of Rs5 crore nett at the box office. Buoyed by largely positive reviews and a strong word-of-mouth, Badla did extremely well over the weekend, collecting Rs8.25 crore nett and Rs9.50 crore nett.
The film, produced by Azure Entertainment, has made Rs22.75 crore nett in its opening weekend, as reported by Boxofficeindia.com. Made at an estimated budget of Rs24 crore, Badla has been released on 1,000 screens in India.
Hollywood film Captain Marvel has been released on 1,900 screens in India. The film collected Rs40.35 crore nett in its opening weekend. Produced by Disney, the Brie Larson-starrer opened to Rs12.85 and then improved slightly over the weekend, making Rs14 and Rs13.50 crore nett on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
Trade analyst Girish Wankhede stated that both films have enjoyed a good opening weekend. “I guess, it’s after a while that we are seeing two films doing well at the box office. They are both vastly different films, catering to a different audience. Bachchan has very acted very well, but director Sujoy Ghosh gets all the credit for making such a tight film. After opening to Rs5 crore nett, it picked up over the weekend, due to its strong word-of-mouth,” said Wankhede.
Marvel franchise is hugely popular across the globe, and especially in India. Avengers: Infinity War (2018) had smashed set the record [Rs31.23 crore nett] for the highest opening day collection for a Hollywood film in India. Wankhede reminded that Captain Marvel should not be compared with Avengers: Infinity War.
“You can’t compare the two films,” says Wankhede, “Infinity War was a multi-starrer. Captain Marvel is the first female superhero film to be launched by the Marvel Universe. For such a film, it has done very good business so far.”
Marvels rival DC Universe released its female-led blockbuster Wonder Woman in June 2017. Wonder Woman, starring Gal Gadot in the title role, had a limited release [329 screens] in India. It had made Rs9 crore nett in its first four days.
